– Lisa Steiman, VP Human Resources, Budge Studios<\/strong><\/p>\n\n \u201cWhen I first joined the team at Budge, we were hiring a lot of developers<\/a> and junior artists,\u201d <\/em>says Lisa Steiman, VP Human Resources at Budge Studios.<\/strong> \u201cA lot of them didn\u2019t have much experience\u2026but they grew with the company and they eventually became our management.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n While these employees had a lot of natural talent, not many of them had a background in managing teams of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe had promoted people who had the right instincts but lacked formal training,\u201d <\/em>says Lisa.<\/strong> \u201cThey just hadn\u2019t ever really been leaders in a professional environment\u2026It was sort of like they were operating blind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n To help bolster their skills, Lisa began to research different leadership and management training options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI knew they needed training,\u201d <\/em>Lisa explains.<\/strong> \u201cBut it was going to be a huge risk to bring in someone from outside of the company to do it. If whoever we brought in didn\u2019t reflect our management philosophy, then the whole thing would be a failure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Unfortunately, most of the trainers Lisa interviewed were the exact opposite of what she was looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe did a ton of research,\u201d <\/em>remembers Lisa<\/strong>.<\/strong> \u201cBut when I called up other trainers, it felt more like a textbook. It was like \u2018Management 101.\u2019 They didn\u2019t want to get to know us before they came here\u2026they just had one presentation that was the same for everyone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lisa didn\u2019t get discouraged though. She kept searching, confident that she would eventually find a partner who could deliver exactly what her team needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She spoke with an Employee Engagement Consultant who recommended her to Lyndon Friesen, Outback\u2019s Lead Skill Development Facilitator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe made an immediate decision,\u201d <\/em>says Lisa.<\/strong> \u201cLyndon just had such a human approach to things, it really resonated with us. We call ourselves \u2018Budgers,\u2019 and after our conversation I said, \u2018Okay, we met another Budger.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Working together, Lisa and Lyndon put together a plan for their leadership training sessions. To start out, they decided to focus on Coaching Fundamentals<\/a> and Emotional Intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Right away, Lisa was impressed with how much Lyndon was willing to customize the programs for Budge Studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLyndon was open to tailoring the training to who we are,\u201d <\/em>Lisa praises.<\/strong> \u201cHe got into the issues that we were really facing\u2026It was so tailored to Budge. We weren\u2019t getting a one-size-fits-all type of approach. It was really unique to us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n And the immediate feedback from Lisa\u2019s team made her confident that they made the right decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was so overwhelmingly positive,\u201d <\/em>Lisa says.<\/strong> \u201cTraining can often be polarizing, but even the people who were resistant ended up enjoying the session. They really got something out of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat\u2019s interesting about this type of training is that you don\u2019t just learn about management \u2013 you learn about yourself,\u201d <\/em>says Lisa.<\/strong> \u201cYou figure out the type of leader you are, and how you can become the best version of that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The managers at Budge Studios rated the program \u201c10\/10<\/strong>\u201d and called the insights \u201clife-changing<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Based on their feedback, Lisa says they decided to bring Lyndon back for additional leadership training. He returned over the next few months to facilitate another workshop for their executive level team, as well as a two-hour \u201cLunch and Learn\u201d for everyone else at the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI think it was really powerful,\u201d <\/em>says Lisa.<\/strong> \u201cLyndon created this environment that was so safe, open, and vulnerable. Even though it was difficult, I had one of my top executives say to me afterwards, \u2018That was brutal, but I\u2019m thankful I went through it because I learned a lot about myself.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Since working with Outback, Lisa says she has seen a noticeable improvement in how the managers at Budge Studios are leading their teams. They have already started to implement some of the learning from their sessions, such as embracing more feedback, and praising people when they do things right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTo be successful, we don\u2019t just want to help people grow as employees\u2026we want to help them grow as people,\u201d <\/em>says Lisa.<\/strong> \u201cWe spend so much time at work here that it\u2019s valuable when people experience a growth of character.
